Acting for the camera · Weekend intensive · Berlin
THE EDGES OF CONTROL
by flavio garcía garcía
Two days, eight actors, one character, two extremes of a performance. We push a take too far, then hold one completely still, and cut them together. Narrative contrast, one of the most powerful tools in cinematic storytelling, felt from the inside, in your own acting.

Who this is for
For actors who want to stretch, not polish.
Actors who feel stuck at one setting
If you're always contained and "truthful," or always big and expressive, this is the weekend you train the opposite muscle on purpose.
Actors curious about the camera, not just the scene
Learn to feel, not just be told, how camera and editing change the meaning of what you do.
Actors who already have a default
You need some acting background behind you: previous training, for the stage or for the camera, or experience from working. This weekend is about breaking your default, and you need one to break.

The method · Acting the Film
Most actors act the scene. This is about acting the film.
Most actors work as guests inside a machine they were never shown. The camera moves, the edit cuts, the story shifts, and the performance is asked to simply survive it.
This weekend is the opposite. Across two days, you get to do everything you've been told not to do: too loud, too big, too much. Then everything you've been told to do, held to its absolute extreme. On camera, on purpose, knowing exactly what the film is doing with you.
This experience is the direct result of years spent training and directing actors, in my workshops and in one-on-one coaching. Every exercise here has been tested and refined on real actors, in real scenes, over real productions.
You're on your feet across two days, in scenes, on camera, take after take, and by the end you're watching yourself on screen, cut both ways. At every moment you'll know what the camera is doing, and why, and how to act inside it. Once you have that, you stop guessing and start choosing.
How the weekend is built
Two days. Opposite in every way.
Day one
Lose control
Handheld, unstable, chasing focus. Fast, raw cuts. A story that's exaggerated, dramatic, all over the place. And acting that is intentionally too much: loud, verbose, extreme. We do everything you've been told not to do. It's funnier than you expect, more frightening than it sounds, and there's real acting hiding inside the chaos.
Day two
Hold it
Locked on a tripod. One shot. No cut. One single thing happens. And acting that is all restraint: contained, held, working from the inside. It looks like the easy half. It's the harder one: with nowhere to hide and nothing to spend, everything has to happen inside you.
The contrast: the point
Then we cut them together, and the magic happens in the middle of the cut. Side by side, your two extremes create an effect neither holds alone. Narrative contrast, one of the most powerful tools in storytelling, felt from the inside instead of explained.
What you'll learn
Craft you can feel, not just understand.
Control in both directions
Break your default. If you live in control, you'll learn to release. If you live in chaos, you'll learn to contain and work inside. Every actor leaves having done the thing they avoid.
Form as an acting choice
Understand how camera behavior and editing change a performance, so you can read a set, a shot, and a director's language, and act for them.
The cut as your ally
Take juxtaposition with you as a working tool: something you can read, anticipate, and use in any audition, any set, any story.
The programme
Input. Shoot. Vary. Screen.
My teaching method
Hands-on from minute one, in a small group of eight. We alternate short, clear input with shooting. Some material is improvised, some is written; I bring prepared pieces built over years of workshops and 1:1 coaching to practise this one thing precisely. Always human-centered, always demanding, always joyful.
01 · The principle
Short, clear input on contrast and what each form does for a story, so you always act knowing what the film is doing with you.
02 · We shoot
Both extremes, on camera, across the two days. Day one's wild block and day two's held block, each performed for its form, on purpose.
03 · We vary
Several iterations across the two days, each a different combination, so the principle gets into your body rather than staying in your notes.
04 · The screening
We close on day two watching everything back, cut together. The room goes quiet. Seeing your own two extremes collide in the edit is the moment the whole weekend lands.
